Small-scale composting at home does make a difference. A big one.
When we see the persistent use of single-use plastics, challenges in getting households to separate trash and recyclables, limited avenues for waste recycling, it can feel like ‘just’ composting your organics at home in your YOLO Compost Tumbler is only a drop in the ocean compared to what needs to be done to reduce and manage waste.
Know that this relatively ‘small’ act of composting your organic waste at home in a YOLO Compost Tumbler makes a very, very big difference.

In California, a new law took effect on 1 January 2022. This law requires households and businesses to compost all food scraps, instead of throwing them into the trash.
“The bill’s goal is to reduce greatly the amount of food scraps going to landfill, where they decompose and emit methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. [The bill] will reduce organic waste in California’s landfills by 75%, once fully implemented.”
Reducing the waste that goes to landfills has knock-on benefits beyond the physical material.
State officials said that “one year of food waste diversion by 2030 is expected to prevent 14 million metric tons of carbon emissions over that trash’s lifetime of decomposition. That equals taking 3 million vehicles off the road for a year”.
Consider too he reduction in trash collection vehicles required to collect this waste and single-use trash bags that will no longer be bought, placed on the curb and dumped at landfill sites.
As you’ll read in this article on Treehugger.com, there are many challenges in packaging organic waste for pick-up. Backyard composting, using a YOLO Compost Tumbler and other composting methods is the best way and a win-win all around.
