A short article on the National Geographic website looks at the history – and prehistory – of composting.

This quote caught my eye:
“Compost heaps, like humans, need exercise (turning), hydration (they need to stay moist), and air.”
YOLO Compost Tumblers score points here. Turning the shells tumbles and mixes the contents. Moisture from nitrogren-rich materials like fruit and vegetable cuttings and peelings provide hydration and, in the closed environment of the YOLO shell, it doesn’t dry out. Opening the lid lets in fresh air and tumbling the contents aerates the mix. Easy!
(It seems that George Washington was an avid composter.)
